Wikipedia resembles the first notions many had of how the Internet would look: pages of hypertext in its original sense. Tim Berners-Lee invented the world wide web to provide a means for scientists to share--but more importantly, link--information. Commercial and personal expression usage quickly overwhelmed that vision, but also overwhelmed information consumers. For a while, search engines seemed like a solution, but profiteers increasingly have weakened that approach. So we have started to come full circle, looking to pre-filtered information on known web sites, such as Wikipedia. It is tempting to suggest this foretells the resurgence of similar sites like open directory, Google directory or the virtual library. But just as Microsoft and Google have taught us that there will only be one dominant operating system, or search engine, I think we will learn that there will only be one dominant web encyclopedia, and its name is Wikipedia.

About Me
- Name: Mateu
- Location: Portland, Oregon, US
Stampeding Caribou dislodged the ice floe where I had been frozen for 71 years. I landed on the shore of Īles-de-la-Madeleine where a motel manager promptly gave me a job cleaning bathrooms. After saving tips and stealing change left by lodgers for 3 years, I paid my way to America. Seeking toilet scrubbing work in Owego, NY, I accidentally boarded a bus to Lake Oswego, OR. Now I live in Portland.
